Yuugetsu
A moment to unwind in the city.
Located on Nakanoshima Island in Arashiyama, Yuugetsu offers an inviting Japanese setting to enjoy tender Kyoto and Kuroge Wagyu shabu-shabu, boiled tofu in a rich Rausu kelp and bonito broth, and seasonal multi-dish sets.
01 / ABOUT THE PLACE
Set on Nakanoshima Island just past Arashiyama's Togetsukyo Bridge, Yuugetsu welcomes diners into peaceful tatami rooms with a gentle river breeze and the feel of classic Kyoto. Screened shoji doors and understated woodwork set an inviting tone, whether you are stopping by during a daytime stroll through the surrounding groves or settling in for an evening meal.
For those craving quality beef, the restaurant's signature shabu-shabu spotlights finely marbled cuts such as Kyoto Kuroge Wagyu and Kyoto beef loin. The pot comes brimming with regional staples: crisp mizuna greens, Kujo green onions, Chinese cabbage, delicate sheets of yuba (tofu skin), and chewy awa-fu (millet wheat gluten). For dipping, guests can alternate between a mellow sesame sauce and the kitchen's special blended ponzu, which enriches the citrus base with grated daikon radish and minced Kujo scallions to balance the rich, sweet fat of the beef. To finish, the leftover broth can be turned into a comforting bowl of udon or a luxurious zosui rice porridge enriched with concentrated eggs and a dusting of Hararyokaku black shichimi spice.
Diners looking for lighter fare gravitate toward the house specialty, yudofu (simmered tofu), or the comprehensive Sakura tofu course. The smooth, silky curds are warmed in a flavorful broth made with Hokkaido Rausu kelp and dried bonito flakes, highlighting the pure sweetness of the soybeans. The multi-course tofu menu features a progression of dishes including yuba sashimi, yuba salad, vegetarian tempura, and gentle simmered vegetables. Another popular daytime option is the Shokado bento paired with yudofu, which arranges sashimi, grilled items, braised delicacies, and fried bites into small, beautifully presented compartments.
Beyond the hot pots and set menus, Yuugetsu presents seasonal dishes that complement a meal, from parboiled pike conger (hamo) and salt-grilled sweetfish in the warmer months to aromatic dobin mushi (earthenware-steamed matsutake broth) in autumn. The drinks list includes local Kyoto sakes alongside rare specialties, such as a rich plum liqueur blending vintage sake from Showa 44 with oak-aged barley shochu. Stepping slightly away from the busy sightseeing trails, the dining room provides a calm space to linger over traditional flavors and the scenic Arashiyama backdrop.
